    SAMPATI

    South Indian Thali Mangalsutra

In South India, the mangalsutra goes by many names and varies in design depending on the region. For instance, in Tamil Nadu, it is known as the Thaali Kodi, while in Telugu-speaking regions, it may be called Mangalasutramu, Pustelu, Maangalyamu, Ramar Thaali, or Bottu. Each version carries deep cultural and spiritual meaning, often featuring unique symbols and traditional craftsmanship.

At Sampati, we celebrate these rich traditions while designing versatile, elegant mangalsutras that suit the modern bride’s lifestyle — meaningful, beautiful, and effortlessly wearable every day.

    significance

Today the term thali, sometimes spelled as tali, is a gold marriage ornament.  It is especially common in southern India, but it’s gaining acceptance in other parts of the world.

The Sanskrit word Thali is derived from the vernacular name of the Palmyra palm, Thala Borassus flabelliformis or a large-leafed talipot palm and thali pat: Corypha umbraculifera both common in south India.

Originally it was a part of the custom to tie a string on either of these palm leaves around the neck of married women to indicate her married state. Eventually, the customs were transferred into the gold ornament. A thali can be made in many different forms and in any size. It basically bears the representation of various gods and goddess of good fortune.

    Symbolic Meaning

Thaali comes in many shapes and forms. These derived mythologically or based on the family customs. The imprints on the Thaali have symbolic representations such as the family deity, Tulsi plant, Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi.

It weighs about 4-5 grams of gold. A family can choose to make it more elaborate or simple by adding gold, coins, diamonds, gems to the main Thaali or on the sides as shown here.

At Sampati, we have designed a unique Thaali collection that is versatile and wearable for daily wear. You can see that below
